Windrush Day – Saturday 22 June

Events are being held to mark 76 years since the Empire Windrush docked in Essex, carrying passengers from the Caribbean to the UK.

In 2023 PCS marked the 75th anniversary of the HMT Empire Windrush arriving in the UK with passengers from the Caribbean arriving to work and start new lives in the UK. PCS continues to call for justice for the Windrush generation and their descendants, and crucially for compensation to be paid to those impacted by the Windrush scandal, as many victims have still not yet been fully compensated.

One of the key updates this year is the Windrush Day Grant Scheme for 2024, which offers funding to support for charities and community groups in creating projects that build community cohesion, have lasting social impact, and help develop educational and entrepreneurial skills for young people. The grants range from £5000 to £50,000.

PCS members can join various events across the country celebrating Windrush Day.

On 22 June the South London Gallery is hosting a day of family-friendly activities, including cooking workshops, a film screening, and a paper bunting-making workshop inspired by Caribbean culture.

The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich will also celebrate on Saturday with a festival featuring talks, workshops, a Caribbean food and craft market, and performances. This event is part of the Great Greenwich Windrush Trail and aims to showcase Caribbean culture and the legacy of the Windrush generation.

These events and initiatives collectively aim to educate and bring communities together, ensuring the legacy of the Windrush generation is celebrated and remembered.
