Shadow minister commits to working with HMRC members

The man who could help shape tax policy in a future Labour government has committed to working with PCS members in HMRC.

In a speech to our HMRC group conference on Monday (20) afternoon, James Murray, shadow financial secretary to the Treasury outlined Labour’s plans to close the tax gap and the tax system fit for the future. And he said he wanted to work with PCS when developing those plans.

“We want to work with PCS when we develop those plans by sharing your insight and expertise,” he told delegates in Brighton.

He also highlighted proposals to scrap non-dom tax loopholes and collect more tax to invest in public services.

“We want to improve the administration of the system and ensure people pay what they owe,” he said.

He said Labour would have a policy of always engaging with unions.

Group president Lorna Merry welcomed the MP’s commitment to working with PCS.

“I welcome the fact that you have come and spoken at our conference and your commitment to work with us to improve the services that our members deliver,” she said.

The shadow minister was also asked a range of questions by delegates on subjects including the war in Gaza, a wealth tax, civil service pay and time off for trade union duties.
