Save Our Sperrins: Not a Nugget, Not an Ounce

A night of comedy, poetry, music and song will be held at Derry’s Millennium Forum on Friday 15 October to raise money for the Save Our Sperrins Campaign.

This show is organised by Save Our Sperrins environmental charity to raise funds for the forthcoming Public Inquiry into a Canadian company’s planning application for a goldmine and processing plant in the Sperrins Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The artists include Kevin McAleer (comedian and Uncle Colm of Derry Girls), Dani Larkin (singer), Emer Maguire (musical comedian & poet), Ursula McHugh (singer) with Dee Doherty on piano, Fintan Harvey (comedian), Conor O’Kane (singer), Sinéad Ní Mhearnóg (poet), Ríona McGread (singer), Orla Hamill (singer) and Loulou McQuaid (harpist).

The campaign is supported by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, of which PCS is an affiliate, and opposes the planning application. The project if delivered in full could have serious implications not only for the scenic beauty of the Sperrins, but could potentially cause untold damage to the ecology of the area as well as the water table, which provides drinking water for Northern Ireland’s second largest city.

More than 45,000 objections have been submitted to the plans, which could see cyanide used at the site in the extraction process. Despite assurances from the company that this process would be carried out elsewhere, campaigners are steadfast in their opposition that this problem should not just be simply handed off to another community to deal with.

Tickets are on sale now and are available to purchase from the Millennium Forum website.
