PCS membership on the increase

There’s never been a better time to join PCS as we go from strength to strength.

Our recent campaigns and workplace wins have led to an increase in PCS membership, which now stands at over 190,000.

The larger our membership, the more leverage we have in discussions with individual departments and employers, and at a national level with the Cabinet Office and the governments of the devolved nations.

At the recent dispute over pay at The Pensions Regulator (TPR), when strike action began on 5 September, PCS membership there stood at 150. By the time the strikes were suspended last month, when the employer agreed to enter into meaningful talks with PCS, membership had more than doubled to 380. This showed the employer that staff were prepared to join together and get involved with the PCS campaign to fight for decent pay.

One new PCS member at TPR said: “After the cost-of-living increases caused my partner and I to struggle, I had to take on a second job to get by. So when I heard from my union colleagues about the pay dispute…. I decided to join PCS in September and strike.”

Other PCS campaigns have also led to an increase in membership.  During our period of national and targeted strike action in 2022 and 2023, there was evidence that members joined PCS so that they could take part in the strike action. And now members who join before 24 April will (depending on your employer) be able to vote in our ballot for strike action over our current national campaign demands.
