PCS ARMs Committee welcomes manifestos for older people

The National Pensioners Convention and Scottish Pensioners Forum have launched their manifestos for a future government.

The PCS ARMs National Committee has welcomed proposals set out in manifestos launched by the National Pensioners Convention and the Scottish Pensioners Forum. The NPC document urges a future government to 'devise a 360-degree strategy for our rapidly ageing population' highlighting the need for an independent commissioner for older people in England and Scotland, as has been done in Wales and Northern Ireland. Their manifesto also calls for urgent action on climate change, housebuilding and safe, dependable public transport for all.

The supportive statement from the Scottish Pensioners Forum includes demands for a fair and 'living state pension', urgent improvements to health and social care as well as calls to tackle the energy crisis and its costs.

Tony Conway, chair of the PCS ARMs National Committee said: "While there are a few areas where PCS would have wished the NPC to go further, the manifesto and the matching statement in Scotland have been produced after wide discussion with pensioners' groups and unions. If political parties sign up to our manifesto, older people and pensioners can look forward to a good retirement without fear of debt and major health and care challenges."
