Labour must deliver to stop the far-right
PCS general secretary, Fran Heathcote, has told a TUC Congress fringe meeting that if the new Labour government fails to deliver for working people, it risks opening the door to the far-right.
Speaking at the Morning Star's fringe meeting on what the new Labour UK government means for workers' rights, she highlighted the consequences of the rising disillusionment in politics in the face of a mobilised and well-funded far-right.
She said: "Our people cannot take more years of austerity, of falling living standards and crumbling public services.
"People voted for change and they want it. But unless things truly change the far right is waiting, and with a seductive narrative that it’s all the fault of the other: migrants, benefit claimants, trade unionists."
Other speakers included CWU general secretary, Dave Ward, who spoke about the opportunity trade unions have with the incoming Labour government. He said, "We've forced Labour to go forward with a new deal for workers. We need a new deal for the country to unite working classes."
Fran spoke about the importance of Labour delivering for working people in their forthcoming budget , "We have to push this Labour government to deliver: for our public services, for our members and for the wider public who rely on functioning public services."
"This summer could be a warning of what’s to come if they don’t."
