Germany: How unions are facing the rise of the far right

Over the past weeks hundreds of thousands of people in Germany have been demonstrating against the far right party Alternative for Germany (AfD).  The trade union movement has been at the forefront of those events.

The trigger for the demos was the breaking of the news that the AfD was working on a “masterplan”, which centres around “re-migration”.

There are three target groups for this “reversed settlement”: asylum seekers, non-Germans with residency rights, and “non-assimilated” German citizens. Therefore people could be forcibly expelled if they have the wrong skin colour, the wrong parents, or aren’t sufficiently “assimilated” into German culture, according to standards set by the AfD, even if they have German citizenship.
