Whitehall workers announce strike in first test for Labour's insourcing manifesto pledge

Outsourced PCS members to take action at Department for Energy Security and Net Zero

Cleaners, security guards and other key workers in Whitehall have announced five days’ strike action during the last week of the current Parliament.

Around 60 Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union members employed by outsourced ISS at Department for Energy Security and Net Zero will walk out from July 22 to 26.

The members are seeking equal pay with workers employed in the same premises on an in-house contract.

PCS general secretary Fran Heathcote said: “This is our first ballot result since the election of the new government and gives Labour an early chance to deliver one of their manifesto pledges – the insourcing of public contracts.

“The shameful disparity in pay between two groups of workers employed in the same building shines a light onto the murky world of outsourcing.

“Our members are standing by to suspend their strike if the government keeps its word and brings this – and other – public contracts back in-house so all workers are treated the same and receive fair pay.”
