The five key PCS demands on pay

26 July 2012

The issue of pay has become much more important as PCS members' living standards have been worsened by the pay freeze / pay cap, increased pension contributions and a steep rise in the cost of living. In response the union has set out its five key pay demands, as PCS research officer Enrico Tortolano explains.

PCS has five key pay demands for 2012 and it is important that these are central to our campaign:

  •  An end to the pay freeze / pay cap policy
  • No pension contribution increases
  • Pay progression as a right for all
  • National pay bargaining not local pay
  • That equality concerns should be the central principle on which pay systems are based and assessed.

Central to the campaign is making clear that pay increases are affordable and are necessary to stimulate the economy. We are also campaigning to redress our economic system that produces obscene income differential between the top earners and the rest. Quite simply, unless the government substantially increases civil service and public sector pay more generally, the UK is sleepwalking into a profound and damaging economic segregation and permanent economic crisis.

These arguments are outlined in the new pay booklet Inequality: The price of austerity. This has proved a useful tool in the branches and already many reps are requesting additional copies for use with members and as a recruitment tool.
