Across the private and public sector people are being forced to work longer, and pay more, for smaller pensions.
These are the unions supporting the action – click on the names for links to the latest from their websites:
Public and Commercial Services union (PCS) – about 250,000 civil servants and workers in government agencies will join the action.
Northern Ireland Public Service Alliance (NIPSA) – the biggest civil service union in Northern Ireland has called its members out on strike.
Rail Maritime and Transport union (RMT) – workers in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, who are in the civil service pension scheme, will join the action.
Unite – the country’s biggest union has 100,000 members in the health service, and 25,000 in the Ministry of Defence and other government departments who will be joining the action.
University and College Union (UCU) – members in further education and newer universities will join the action.
