In sending a message of solidarity to PCS members, set to strike on 26 July over thousands of job cuts and privatisation, general secretary of the National Union of Journalists, Michelle Stanistreet was deeply critical of the government and called on the home secretary to negotiate with the union.
Michelle Stanistreet, NUJ general secretary, said: “The NUJ is sending a message of solidarity and support to all members of the PCS across the Home Office who will be striking next week. The blame for this state of affairs is clearly with the government which has made swingeing cuts to the UK Border Agency, the Identity and Passport Service and Criminal Records Bureau. It is putting intolerable stress on the staff remaining and making it impossible to run a proper service. Theresa May must be prepared to negotiate with the union unless she is prepared to preside over yet another coalition omnishambles.”
