PCS is the largest non-industrial union in the defence sector, with approximately 20,000 members who work at every defence establishment throughout the country and abroad.
We are the fastest growing union in the defence sector and throughout the civil service. We also represent a significant number of members within the privatised defence sector and are exploring ways of enhancing the representation of members in the private sector.
We have and will continue to explain to the politicians and media alike the value that every civil servant provides. Our union believes the strategic defence and security review was a missed opportunity and we are asking that those in power take a full and proper look at the work that our members do in support of defence.
Our priority is to improve the quality of working life for all of our members. We do this by representing members on a range of issues every day of the year and through bargaining and campaigning hard to improve pay, terms and conditions. We also aim to ensure that every member of our union is treated with dignity and respect at work.
We negotiate with the employer on every issue that affects our members in the Defence Sector.
Chris Dando, the DSg group president, is vitally aware of the part DSg members have to play in our union:
"Our campaigning is making progress. Ministers now have a much better understanding of the work that defence civilians do. They now recognise how vital we are in supporting the front line and have agreed to work with us to deliver an alternative to 25,000 civilian job cuts. Whilst this is positive, what is also clear is that members will no longer put up with the continued attack on their pay, jobs, terms and conditions.”
“I am asking every PCS member in the Defence Sector to get behind our union’s campaigns. Loyal hard working members do not deserve pay freezes, increased pension contributions or any of the other myriad of attacks on your terms and conditions. We must stand together in 2012 and fight to preserve our rights.”
Group executive committee
There is a PCS DSg group executive committee (GEC) that is elected each year by all members. Below the GEC there are branch executive committees (BECs) also elected by you.
All of these individuals are civil servants who volunteer to help fellow members. We always need more volunteers so why not join us? Even if you can only spare an hour every now and then to distribute information to fellow members your active support and involvement can make a huge difference. There are numerous PCS full-time officers dedicated to DSg.

The ‘fair deal in defence’ sets out five key objectives:
· Fighting for job security
· Fighting privatisation
· A say in our future
· No compulsory redundancies
· A UK living wage.
Email your MP and ask them to support the campaign
Unions have founded the 'Fair Deal in Defence' campaign in response to unprecedented attacks on civil servants in the MoD.
Since 2010 over 20,000 civil service jobs have been lost in the Department.
We're asking MPs to get in touch with defence secretary Philip Hammond to demand that he meets unions to discuss both staff conditions and the effect that cuts could have on the front line.
