Who’s who

Board of Directors

The body that ensures sound management is in place within PCS Credit Union and also serves as a liaison between the membership and the credit union.  In addition to their other duties, each Director will undertake a mentoring/liaison function with the Local Co-ordinators within that region.

Christine Chorlton

PCS Region: ARMs/Yorkshire & Humberside

Christine is currently Chair of the Board. She worked within HM Revenue & Customs for 33 years and is now retired.  She has been actively involved within PCS as a member of both the National Executive Committee and Finance Committee and in 2009 was awarded life membership.

She was a member of the Finance Committee when the conference motion to set up a Credit Union was carried and was actively involved in laying its foundations. “I have seen the misery of people driven to take loans at extortionate rates of interest because of desperate circumstances, resulting in massive debts and even driving people to suicide.  I believe our Credit Union will be a lifeline for many members in difficult times and will also encourage people to save in better times.”

Stephen Stables

PCS Region: Scotland/Northern Ireland

Stephen is a native of Aberdeen, Scotland. A real ‘Tarzan’ he obtained a BSc in Forestry at Aberdeen University and is currently employed by the Forestry Commission. Stephen is responsible for the preparation of Design Plans for Galloway FD, the largest forest district in Scotland.

As well as volunteering for PCS Credit Union’s Board of Directors, he is also Treasurer of PCS Forestry Commission South Scotland branch, Justice of the Peace for South Strathclyde and Dumfries & Galloway. Stephen enjoys golf, football, music, scutelliphily and gardening and is happily married with 2 children.

Allie McLachlan

PCS Region: North-West

Allie initially commenced as a member of the Supervisory Committee and has now taken up the role of Secretary. Allie has over 20 years experience of working in the public sector for various Government departments. Allie’s main focus throughout her career has been in I.T. and Finance areas but she also has substantial experience in Project Management. She has been a dedicated member of the Home Office Group Executive Committee, the Home Office Hardship Fund Committee and the Home Office Editorial Board but is currently taking a well earned sabbatical from these roles.

“I became involved with the PCS Credit Union as I could see this was an area where our members were being disadvantaged by what was currently available from the financial sector. I was also aware of the effect on people in real financial hardship. I felt we could really make a difference by offering an alternative solution and I’m firmly behind putting people before profit.”

Dave Bean

PCS Region: Midlands

Dave has recently taken up the role of Treasurer.

Paul Vizard

PCS Region: Midlands

Harvey Crane

PCS Region: Eastern

Harvey Crane is an active trade unionist in the PCS Union and is currently Branch Secretary in the Anglia Branch of HMRC.  He has been involved in the Labour and Trade Union movement since joining the Young Socialists in the Labour Party in 1981 at the age of 15.

He is as he says “Not young anymore, but still a Socialist”. Harvey was formerly an elected Treasurer of the HMRC Group and he believes this and his role as a Councillor in Ipswich give him useful experience in carrying out his role on the Board of the Credit Union.

Jane Mills

PCS Region: London & South East

Jane has worked for the DWP for 16 years (mostly within the Jobcentre) and has been a PCS member for the same amount of time. She has held various posts within the trade union including Chair, Organiser Office Rep/Health & Safety Officer. Currently she is also the DWP South East London Branch Learning Coordinator.

She was actively involved in promoting PCS Credit Union as a volunteer Local Co-ordinator for approximately 18 months before joining the Board. 2012 saw her receive PCS Credit Union’s Volunteer of the year award which she says inspired her to get more involved with the running of the Credit Union and to work hard to make it a success.

Peter Kelly

PCS Region: Scotland/Northern Ireland

Vice-Chair of the Board

Martin Dutton

PCS Region: Eastern

Martin is currently the Joint Chair of the PCS R&C Anglia Branch working closely with the Secretary, Harvey Crane, but is due to retire shortly after a 40 year apprenticeship in HMC&E and HMR&C.  Having also been an active trade unionist for the majority of that time, including serving in every branch position and on the Group SOC, he is eager to use all his experience to become an effective Director and Vice-Treasurer. He is looking forward to using his newly acquired free time being involved in developing the Credit Union for all its members.

PCS Credit Union is now recruiting for additional members of the Board of Directors to supplement the current Board. As mentioned above, Regional Co-ordination is an important part of these duties; therefore targeted recruitment is taking part for the following regions:

•Wales

Supervisory Committee

Elected by the membership, the Supervisory Committee perform an internal audit throughout the year. They are responsible for ensuring the credit union operates within the law, rules and policies of the credit union and in the interest of members.

Rob Hall

PCS Region: Scotland

Rob worked in Banking and Financial services in the early part of his working life and later as a management contractor for a private company working within MOD bases overseas.  Most recently he has worked as a corporate and private debt collector in HMRC before transferring to management of the Debt Management Telephone Centres.

He has been a union rep in all walks of life for over 20 years and newly retired is looking to use his skill base to help operate the newly launched, socially aware Credit Union for PCS.

PCS Credit Union is now recruiting for an additional member of the Supervisory Committee.

Local Co-ordinators

These volunteers perform an important role by promoting the credit union to prospective members.  This can be through the distribution of application packs, staffing stalls, giving presentations or answering or referring queries. Depending on individual availability, a varying amount of hours per month can be committed to this promotional work.

We hope to find enough Local Co-ordinators to provide a presence for the credit union in every branch, so that members of the credit union have someone they can speak to about any queries or problems.

We are currently looking for more people to volunteer as Local Co-ordinators.

Project Team

The project team currently consists of 3 members who were employed to undertake the development work for the credit union.  This Project Team will also be responsible for the day to day running of the credit union initially.

Annette Griffiths

Annette joined the project team in October 2009 as Project Manager and works part-time 4 days per week.  She has a wealth of experience working as a senior manager in both the public sector and trade unions. She is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

Alaine Perrott

Alaine has been working in the team on a part-time basis since April 2009 and joined the team full-time as Office Manager in February 2010.  Alaine has a breadth of experience from both the public and private sector. She studied to degree level at the University of Auckland, New Zealand where she obtained a Bachelors degree in Commerce, majoring in Accounting and a Bachelors degree in Arts, majoring in French.

Anne Martin-Coyle

Anne joined the team in October 2012 and provides administrative support. She came to work for PCS after working for many years in the private sector. Before joining the credit union team, Anne worked in a busy bargaining unit supporting officers and reps to represent their members and build campaigns to defend members interests. "Since coming to PCS I have learned a great deal about trade unions and the role they play in giving working people a voice."

"I am pleased to be working in the PCS credit union - with pay freezes and pay cuts, members need an organisation like this to support them when they are in financial difficulty. I am committed to building a successful credit union for PCS members as an alternative to high street banks and lenders who exploit the low paid and the poor".
