The National Pensioners' Convention (NPC), to which ARMS is affiliated, is supporting the TUC organised ‘Action for Rail’ campaign and is asking affiliates to participate in the following activities:

  • Beeching Anniversary Day of Action (27 March). This week there will be a national day of action to mark the 50th anniversary of the publication of the Beeching Report. The focus of the day of action will be to raise awareness about the potential for service and staff cuts resulting from the government’s call for cuts to rail industry costs of £3.5bn by 2019.
  • Disabled and Older Passengers Day of Action (24 April). This will highlight the impact of de-staffing of trains, stations and ticket offices on passengers with mobility and access issues, focussing on disabled passengers and older people.

Meeting of ARMS national committee

The National Committee met on 6 March. The guest speaker was Jeff Evans, head of the new PCS ‘Department of the Regions & Nations’.

Jeff told the meeting that responsibility for ARMS was now part of his remit because there is a strong link between ARMS and the regions, which he hoped would become stronger.

He sees ARMS as an integral part of PCS and his department will be looking to expand its role and membership in the future. A good discussion then followed about the ARMS ‘Review’ being undertaken by Peter Harris and the improvements needed to re-energise our work.
